Tournament officials announced today that the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship will be held at Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico City, Mexico. The tournament attracts a world-class field that features the top 50 golfers in the world in one of the season's most elite events.
Club de Golf Chapultepec opened in 1928 and served as the original and primary site for the Mexican Open from 1944-1960, before the tournament began rotating sites. The very first event, held in December 1944, took place with a first prize of $2,500 out of a $10,000 purse. Al Espinosa, head golf professional at Mexico City Country Club at the time, won the event. As the inaugural professional golf tournament at Club de Golf Chapultepec, it brought the modern tournament to life at the facility
"We're excited to be able to bring such a global tournament to Club de Golf Chapultepec," said Club de Golf Chapultepec Chairman Rodrigo Lebois "There will be plenty of tough holes that will keep the leaderboard interesting, and we're excited to be able to offer memorable viewing experiences for the fans and our members while they're here during tournament week. Being involved with this event is more than an honor, and we're looking forward to supporting Grupo Salinas' mission of growing the game of golf in Mexico.".
Featuring a 7,267-yard, par-72 course, Club de Golf Chapultepec last held the Mexican Open in 2014, which is now part of PGA TOUR Latinoamérica. Over the course of 18 past editions played there, the club members witnessed Mexican Open wins by stars such as Al Espinoza (1944, 1945, 1946 and 1947), Roberto De Vicenzo (1951, 1953 and 1955), Ben Crenshaw (1981) and Jay Haas (1991)..
