This tournament dates back to the early to mid 1960's when it first hosted the Thunderbird Classic and then later the Westchester Classic on the PGA Tour's schedule of events. During the same 1967-2007 time span, The Northern Open had always been played at the same course, the Westchester Country Club in Harrison, New York. In 2008 the tournament switched to Bethpage State Park in Paramus, New Jersey, and in 2009 relocated again to Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey. With a view of the New York City harbor and skyline, not to mention the Statue of Liberty, this was one breathtaking PGA Tour venue.

Watney didn't miss a green until the 16th hole, turned a two-shot deficit against Sergio Garcia into a three-shot lead, overcame a trio of three-putt bogeys with clutch birdies, and closed with a 2-under 69 for a three-shot victory.

2011 Barclays Open Golf Tournament Winner

Dustin Johnson was 19 under for the 54-hole and jumped to the top to win 2011 Northern Open Golf Tournament. Johnson made it two consecutive victories in tournaments shortened to three rounds, shooting a final-round 65 to beat Matt Kuchar by two strokes and climb from 19th to first in the points race.

2009 Barclays Open Golf Tournament Winner

Heath Slocum might have been the one player no one expected to win The Northern Open. He was locked in a tense battle over the final hour Sunday, August 30^th, 2009 at Liberty National with some of the biggest names in golf such as Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker, Padraig Harrington and Ernie Els. Slocum holed a 20-foot par putt on the final hole to remain at 9-under-par, giving him a one-stroke victory over Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Pádraig Harrington and Steve Stricker. The 2008 Northern Open resulted in Vijay Singh winning this tournament for the fourth time, after beating Sergio Garcia and Kevin Sutherland on the second playoff hole.
